Margaret Thatcher met an SAS commander after his squad killed three IRA members in a suspected shoot-to-kill ambush in County Tyrone in 1988. The meeting is described in a new podcast about the British Army regiment.
Brothers Gerard Harte, 29, and Martin Harte, 23, and their brother-in-law Brian Mullin, 26, were shot dead on 30 August 1988. Former British soldier George Simm told the podcast he took the place of a UDR member in a plan to draw the men towards soldiers waiting near Cloughfin in Drumnakilly, between Carrickmore and Omagh.
Simm, a former SAS regimental sergeant major, said he posed as a coal lorry driver changing a wheel at the roadside. He said the SAS and RUC had held a planning day before the operation. The killings took place during the Troubles, when SAS operations were the subject of shoot-to-kill allegations.
