US immigration agents searched Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s home in the Washington DC area as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation, a Justice Department spokesperson said. The spokesperson said Homeland Security Investigations agents had a judicially authorised warrant but gave no details of the investigation.

Omar, a Democrat and critic of President Donald Trump, described the search as an attempt to target political opponents through federal law enforcement. Her communications director, Jacklyn Rogers, said the congresswoman had done nothing wrong.

Trump said on Monday that he had no involvement in the Justice Department investigation. Congress was out of session, and it was unclear whether Omar was at the property when agents searched it.
