Two people have died amid severe flooding in Istanbul after what the city's governor described as its heaviest rainfall in 84 years.
A 14-year-old boy was electrocuted after stepping into a puddle, and a 34-year-old man died after slipping while crossing a road and striking his head. The governorship is investigating the boy's death.
Deputy mayor Nuri Aslan said 595 people trapped by the flooding had been moved to safety, while more than 8,000 workers were responding. Cars were submerged in some districts, and 46 planes were unable to land at Istanbul airports.
Governor Davut Gül has told residents to stay home unless going out is essential. Schools were ordered to close on Thursday and Friday as further rain was expected, and the interior ministry has warned of sudden flooding in several provinces.
