Kim Aris has spoken with his mother, Myanmar’s detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi, for the first time in more than five years. He announced the conversation in a Facebook post on Thursday.
Aris, who lives in the UK, said hearing her voice again meant a great deal to him. He also cautioned that a single conversation did not amount to regular family access.
Myanmar authorities say Aung San Suu Kyi is under house arrest in the capital, Naypyidaw. The military removed her from power in a February 2021 coup and held her largely in isolation. Authorities said she was moved from prison to house arrest in April and have since published photographs of her meeting visitors.
