Israeli forces detained about 80 volunteers helping Palestinians pick olives near Nahalin in the West Bank, including New York Democratic congressional nominee Brad Lander.
The group included volunteers from the US, Israel and Britain, as well as several rabbis and Israel’s former deputy attorney general. They were taken to a police station after being held near Bethlehem.
Lander posted from a bus taking him to the station that he had been detained with rabbis and other volunteers. He said they had been harvesting olives near Nahalin and argued that doing so was not a crime.
Lander, a critic of the Israeli government, has opposed Israel’s continued occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. The detention came amid attacks on Palestinians harvesting olives and people accompanying them across the occupied West Bank.
