A physician has found Johnathan Hamby incompetent to stand trial in the fatal stabbing of a man near a Kroger on Atlanta’s Beltline, court records show. Hamby, 54, is accused of stabbing 29-year-old Ramon Harris on Aug. 23. Police said Harris was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died.

Hamby faces murder and aggravated assault charges, along with charges of terroristic threats and acts and possessing a firearm or knife during certain felonies. His case has moved to the Competency Docket, which handles cases involving defendants unable to stand trial.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said Hamby had previously been arrested at least 30 times across several metro Atlanta counties. At the time of the stabbing, Hamby was on probation over a 2023 aggravated assault in Chamblee and 2022 trespassing and weapons violations. Hamby’s family said he has a severe mental illness that causes psychosis and argued that failures in the court system contributed to the tragedy.
