A 22-year-old woman died after being shot Saturday night in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood, police said. Officials identified her as Abbigail Somoza.
Somoza had just returned from shopping for Halloween supplies with her mother when shots were fired about a block away, according to a police account. Her mother was not injured. Somoza was standing in the 2800 block of West 23rd Street around 8:43 p.m. when she heard a loud noise and felt pain, police said.
An ambulance took her to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, but she later died. The Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled her death a homicide after an autopsy found a gunshot wound to her torso.
Whether the shooting was targeted remains unclear. No arrests have been announced, and Area 4 detectives are investigating. Loved ones have set up a fundraiser for Somoza.
