The Chicago White Sox set a nine-inning postseason record for strikeouts in Game 5 against the Cleveland Guardians. Strikeouts accounted for 78% of Chicago’s outs.
Munetaka Murakami and Andrew Benintendi, batting fourth and fifth, each went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts. Four other White Sox hitters struck out more than once.
Chicago had struck out 19 times in Game 3 on Wednesday, setting the record that Game 5 surpassed. Its 75 strikeouts across the best-of-five series also broke the previous mark of 64, according to baseball statistician Sarah Langs.
The team had struggled with strikeouts during the regular season, too. Shortstop Colson Montgomery set a major league single-season record with 227.
