Cornell Green, a longtime Dallas Cowboys defensive back who helped the team win its first Super Bowl, has died at 86, the Cowboys announced Wednesday.
Green arrived at Dallas training camp in 1962 as a former college basketball star with little football experience. He made the roster and became part of the Cowboys’ original Doomsday Defense.
He played every regular-season game during his 13 seasons with Dallas, from 1962 through 1974, and appeared in 15 playoff games. After starting three games as a rookie, he started 167 of the next 168 games he played.
Green earned five Pro Bowl selections and first-team All-Pro honors in 1966 and 1967. His 34 interceptions remain tied for fifth in Cowboys history. The team also named him to its 25th Anniversary Cowboys Team.
