The Dallas Mavericks waived center Dwight Powell on Monday, ending the longest tenure of any player on their roster. The move came two days before Dallas was due to open its season on the road against the Houston Rockets.
Powell, 35, spent 12 seasons with the Mavericks and ranks fifth in franchise history in games played. He appeared in 768 career games, all but five of them for Dallas, and averaged 6.5 points and 4.2 rebounds across his time with the Mavericks and Boston Celtics.
His best scoring season came in 2018-19, when he averaged 10.6 points. He posted a career-high 5.7 rebounds per game the following season. Powell had joined Dallas in a December 2014 trade with Boston and was competing for a roster spot this season on an Exhibit 10 contract.
