Gavin Williams is set to start Saturday's decisive AL Division Series game for the Cleveland Guardians, two days after recording the final out of their Game 4 win over the Chicago White Sox.
The teams will meet at Progressive Field, with the winner advancing to face the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL Championship Series. Chicago will start Sean Burke, its top starting pitcher during the regular season. Williams led the American League with 248 strikeouts.
Baseball researcher Sarah Langs noted that Williams would be only the sixth pitcher since 1945 to finish one game and start the next in the same postseason series. He threw 18 pitches in relief in Game 4; Saturday's start would come after one day of rest.
