Spring Branch Academic Institute in Houston ranks No. 1 in Texas for both elementary and middle schools in U.S. News & World Report’s 2027 rankings. Two Houston schools also placed among the state’s top five elementary schools.
The Spring Branch ISD magnet school serves highly gifted students from first through 12th grade, which puts it in both rankings. It has operated since 2013 and has no campus of its own: younger students attend classes at Thornwood Elementary School or Spring Forest Middle School. Admission requires an application and a lottery.
Nearly 50 Houston-area elementary and middle schools reached the Texas top 100. Houston ISD’s T.H. Rogers ranked second in the region for both levels. The rankings covered 4,782 elementary schools and 2,322 middle schools across Texas.
