The New York Knicks lost their season opener 106-100 to the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden, after raising their championship banner and receiving their rings before the game.
New York fell behind by as many as nine points in the fourth quarter after a poor third. An 8-1 run, sparked by a Jose Alvarado steal and three-pointer, cut the gap to two with 8:07 remaining.
The Knicks kept closing in but could not take the lead. A Karl-Anthony Towns three-pointer made it 96-95 with four and a half minutes left, before two Jalen Brunson misses helped Philadelphia restore a five-point margin. Towns later cut the deficit to two with another three, but the 76ers scored the next four points.
Coach Mike Brown acknowledged the emotional pregame ceremony but said the Knicks could not use it as an excuse for the loss.
