Two passengers died in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 680 in Concord early Monday, and the driver of their car was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, the California Highway Patrol said.
The head-on collision happened around 1:50 a.m. in the northbound lanes, just south of Willow Pass Road. A preliminary CHP investigation found that a Lexus carrying a woman driver and three passengers was traveling south in those lanes when it hit a Chevrolet driven by another woman.
The two passengers who died were in the Lexus. Its third passenger and both drivers suffered major injuries. The CHP said two Lexus passengers, including one who died, were not wearing seatbelts; everyone else was wearing one. The crash remains under investigation.
