A small plane crashed at the intersection of Capitol Expressway and Excalibur Drive in San Jose on Saturday. The two adults and one child aboard did not sustain injuries that threatened their lives, the San Jose Fire Department said.
Recordings of air traffic communications indicate the pilot reported engine failure and declared an emergency before the crash. Whether engine trouble caused the crash remains unconfirmed; the FAA said it is investigating.
The Cessna 177 was based at Reid-Hillview Airport in East San Jose. San Jose State University said Flying20 owns and operates the plane. The club includes some university students, employees and alumni but is independent of the university.
Fire crews also responded to a separate plane crash at Reid-Hillview on Friday night, with no injuries reported. Nearby resident Maria Reyes said she wants the airport closed because she fears another crash in her neighborhood.
