Murdock-Portal Elementary in San Jose slipped from first to third in California's 2027 public elementary school rankings. U.S. News & World Report released the list Tuesday; the K-5 school, with more than 500 students, remains the Bay Area's highest-ranked entry.
Buckeye Union Mandarin Immersion Charter in El Dorado Hills took the top spot after going unranked last year. Cold Spring Elementary in Santa Barbara rose 12 places to second.
Six Bay Area schools reached the top 10, all in the South Bay or on the Peninsula. Cupertino's William Faria Elementary placed fourth. Redwood City's North Star Academy took fifth, followed by Palo Alto's Herbert Hoover Elementary at sixth. Two Los Altos schools completed the Bay Area group: Covington Elementary at seventh and Bullis Charter School at eighth.
Covington climbed from 29th last year. Lower on the list, San Jose's John Muir Elementary rose from 44th to 12th, and Mountain View's Stevenson Elementary moved from 38th to 14th.
