Spanish authorities confirmed that seven Britons were among 13 people killed in wildfires in Almería province. Following post-mortem examinations, authorities said on Tuesday that 12 of those who died were foreign nationals.
The fires swept through the southern Spanish province on Thursday. Nearly 1,500 people were evacuated, and authorities said the fire has since been contained after burning about 7,000 hectares.
Pete and Fran Gillam, a British couple living in the village of Bédar, were among those killed, their family confirmed. Officials said three of the other victims were Belgian, one was French and one was American. The remaining victim was Spanish.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office had previously said it was supporting affected British nationals and their families and was in close contact with Spanish authorities.
