A four-alarm fire caused extensive damage to a vacant Staten Island warehouse Saturday evening, and its roof collapsed, fire officials said.
The fire was reported around 5:42 p.m. on Hylan Boulevard at Mount Loretto Unique Area. More than 200 FDNY and EMS personnel responded. FDNY Chief of Operations Kevin Woods said firefighters found flames throughout the building when they arrived. One firefighter suffered a minor burn to his leg.
Crews set up a collapse zone because of concerns about the remaining walls. Officials said they kept the fire from reaching nearby buildings, including two schools, a senior center and a church. The warehouse had been empty for at least five years.
Fire crews planned to stay overnight to put out hot spots and monitor the site. Fire marshals are investigating the cause.
