Sir Keir Starmer has faced his final Prime Minister’s Questions as prime minister, after farewell talks with senior ministers at Downing Street.
He told MPs he would give Andy Burnham his full backing. Burnham is expected to succeed him next week, with nominations for the Labour leadership due to close on Wednesday.
Starmer opened the Commons session with a tribute to murdered politician Ann Widdecombe and called for stronger protection of democracy. His exchanges with Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch began on a lighter note before turning to questions about the handover.
At the close, Starmer described the moment as the end of his political journey. He also wished England luck ahead of their World Cup semi-final against Argentina that evening, saying he planned to watch it on television.
