Sir Keir Starmer pledged his full support to Andy Burnham during his final Prime Minister’s Questions. Burnham is expected to succeed him, though nominations for the Labour leadership were still due to close on Wednesday.

Starmer held farewell talks with senior ministers at Downing Street before facing MPs. He paid tribute to Ann Widdecombe and called for stronger protection of democracy.

Questions from Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch turned to the handover after a lighter opening. Reflecting on his time in office, Starmer pointed to his backing for the Hillsborough Law campaign and the government’s support for Ukraine.

He also told MPs he planned to watch television at 8pm, when England were due to play Argentina in the World Cup semi-final.
