England supporters flying flags at home for Wednesday's World Cup semi-final against Argentina could face a fine of up to £2,500 if they breach display rules.

The match kicks off at 8pm, with Thomas Tuchel's side competing for a place in Sunday's final. Government guidance says flags must be kept safe and maintained so they do not harm the appearance of the site. Anyone displaying one also needs the site owner's permission, including permission from the highway authority if it is placed on highway land.

Flags must not obstruct official transport signs or create a hazard for road, rail, waterway or air traffic. Roof and garden flagpoles can carry flags without consent within specified limits, but displaying a flag on both a projecting pole and a vertical rooftop pole requires consent. The rules also limit the size of lettering or symbols on flags in certain protected areas.
