Officials are coordinating security ahead of England’s World Cup semi-final against Argentina amid fears that Argentinian football troublemakers may travel to the United States.
The government in Buenos Aires is liaising with British counterparts, the FBI and local police to try to prevent troublemakers from reaching Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Fans of the two teams will not be segregated, adding to concerns about the match.
The security operation has included meetings involving Georgia State Police, Miami police, Scotland Yard and the head of Buenos Aires’ Mass Events Division. The concerns follow isolated clashes between rival fans in Miami during England’s match against Norway last week, both inside the stadium and around South Beach.
England and Argentina have a long football rivalry, including World Cup meetings in 1966 and 1986. The countries also fought the Falklands War in 1982.
