UK pubs could pour 14 million pints on Wednesday as England face Argentina in a World Cup semi-final, the British Beer and Pub Association estimates.
The match starts at 8pm, and landlords are preparing for what they expect to be record crowds. The association forecasts six million more pints than on a typical July Wednesday, a rise of 75%. Its chief executive, Emma McClarkin, expects the boost to exceed what pubs normally see on a bank holiday or New Year’s Eve.
An interactive map lists 2,313 pubs across the UK where fans are expected to be able to watch the match. It also identifies 1,302 football-free pubs for those who want to avoid the match atmosphere.
