Police have arrested 12 people over a suspected threat to an Islamic gathering at Shrubland Hall in Suffolk. Officers advised organisers to bring the UK Ijtima to an early close on Sunday; the event ended safely.
Counter Terrorism Policing London commander Helen Flanagan said investigators believed the gathering was the intended target. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described the threat as credible. Thousands had attended over the weekend.
In Surrey, three men were detained on Sunday over a suspected conspiracy to murder. Police also held a woman in east London on suspicion of helping an offender. Eight more men were arrested under section 41 of the Terrorism Act across Surrey, Essex, Ipswich, Greater Manchester and London. Those arrests took place on Sunday and Monday.
Suffolk Constabulary Assistant Chief Constable Alice Scott said a visible police presence would remain near Shrubland Hall over the coming days.
