Counter-terrorism police are leading the investigation into the suspected murder of former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe, who was found dead at her Dartmoor home with serious head injuries.
Devon and Cornwall Police found her at the property in Haytor Vale at about 11.40am on Thursday 9 July. Investigators believe the attack may have happened nearly 24 hours earlier. A 28-year-old man from Rotherham was arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday 11 July.
Counter Terrorism Policing South East said new evidence had prompted it to lead the investigation. The force said the man had since been re-arrested on suspicion of committing, preparing or instigating acts of terrorism. A further detention warrant allows him to be held for questioning for up to seven days under the Terrorism Act.
Widdecombe represented Maidstone and later Maidstone and The Weald as an MP for 23 years. She subsequently served as a Brexit Party MEP and became a Reform UK spokeswoman.
