Hundreds of flights across East Asia were cancelled on Friday as Typhoon Champi approached Taiwan’s north-east coast. Schools and offices closed across most of the island, and authorities urged people to avoid coasts and mountains.
Authorities said one person died after being swept away by waves. The storm injured 171 people and forced 1,000 others to evacuate. Champi was producing gusts of 191km/h on Friday afternoon.
Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration expects rainfall to peak on Saturday morning and continue into the evening. Up to 90cm of rain was forecast for the north-east. Weather agencies expect the storm’s eye to pass Taiwan without making landfall, though forecasters have not ruled out landfall.
