An Avianca flight bound for New York diverted to Miami International Airport early Friday after severe turbulence injured people aboard. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said the plane landed safely around 3:30 a.m. on October 9.
The flight had departed Medellín, Colombia, for John F. Kennedy International Airport. Fire Rescue reported eight injuries and said one person needed treatment at a trauma center. Avianca gave a different count: nine injured, including six passengers and three crew members. Eight people were taken to Miami hospitals.
Avianca said its airport team was helping the remaining passengers arrange onward travel to New York. The Federal Aviation Administration said it would investigate the incident.
