Eight passengers were injured after severe turbulence prompted Avianca Flight 252 to divert to Miami International Airport, where it made an emergency landing.
The flight was traveling from Medellín, Colombia, to New York. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and emergency medical teams met the aircraft after it landed. First responders said the eight passengers were stabilized and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Hospital officials said the passengers were being treated mainly for moderate to severe head and shoulder injuries after being thrown from their seats. Federal aviation officials have opened an investigation into the incident.
