A US immigration officer shot a man inside a car in the Bronx on Thursday while the man's five-year-old son was in the back seat. Officials said the man, identified as 28-year-old Oscar Belgal, was alive and in hospital.
The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), confirmed that an officer fired while trying to arrest Belgal. It described him as unlawfully in the US and said he had a previous grand larceny conviction and multiple earlier arrests. The department also alleged he was associated with the Trinitarios criminal group.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the officer fired several shots into the car with the child inside. He condemned the shooting and said he would ask President Donald Trump to halt ICE enforcement operations in the city.
Governor Kathy Hochul said she had spoken to Trump about the shooting and requested the release of any body-camera footage. Trump had not commented publicly on the incident.
