A man died after Phoenix police officers shot him at an apartment complex on East Sunland Avenue on October 10, 2026. Police said he had raised a firearm toward officers after ignoring orders to drop it.
Officers were called to the complex at 40 East Sunland Avenue around 12:45 p.m. after a report of someone walking there with a gun and a knife, Phoenix Police Sergeant Chris Berrelleza said. Dispatchers later told officers the person had entered an apartment. When officers approached it, an adult man came out holding both weapons.
According to Berrelleza, officers issued multiple commands and fired less-lethal PepperBall rounds before the man raised the gun and officers shot him. Officers then provided medical aid, and the Phoenix Fire Department took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police reported no injuries to officers or other people nearby.
