Anthony Barry will be beside Thomas Tuchel when England face Argentina in Wednesday’s men’s World Cup semi-final, with a place in the final at stake. Kick-off is at 20:00 BST.
The 40-year-old assistant coach was still playing for Accrington Stanley in 2015 while starting to coach the club’s Under-16s. Two decades ago, he was part of the Accrington side that won the Conference and returned to the Football League after 44 years.
After retiring, Barry became assistant manager at Wigan Athletic. He joined Chelsea’s first-team staff in 2020 under Frank Lampard and stayed when Tuchel took over. Chelsea won the Champions League within months. Barry later rejoined Tuchel at Bayern Munich in 2023.
Barry has also worked with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium and Portugal national teams. His work includes a focus on set-pieces; for his Uefa Pro Licence dissertation, he analysed 17,000 throw-ins.
