Anthony Barry will be alongside Thomas Tuchel as England face Argentina on Wednesday, seeking a place in their first men's World Cup final since 1966. The assistant coach, now 40, was playing for Accrington Stanley and beginning to coach the club's Under-16s in 2015.
Barry spent much of his playing career in the lower leagues and was part of the Accrington side that won the Conference 20 years ago. After retiring, he became assistant manager at Wigan Athletic, then joined Chelsea's first-team coaching staff in 2020. Tuchel kept him on when he took charge in 2021; Chelsea won the Champions League within months.
Barry has since worked with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium and Portugal national teams, and reunited with Tuchel at Bayern Munich in 2023. He specialises in set-pieces and has become a familiar face through his half-time television interviews during England's World Cup matches.
