Andy Burnham reportedly has yet to speak in the House of Commons since being sworn in as Makerfield MP on 22 June.
The former Greater Manchester mayor has made no speeches or spoken questions in the chamber during his first three weeks back at Westminster. He has, however, posed for a selfie with Labour colleagues in Westminster Hall. His parliamentary salary for that period is estimated at around £5,600.
Burnham is expected to succeed Sir Keir Starmer as Labour leader and prime minister on 20 July after winning the backing of a large majority of Labour MPs. If he does not speak before MPs leave for their summer break this Thursday, his first Commons remarks since returning could come from the prime minister’s despatch box. The break could delay that appearance until September.
