A magnitude-7 earthquake in northern Tibet has killed at least 16 people and injured 54 in the Nagqu area, official reports said. Search and rescue work is continuing.
At least 339 homes and 20 livestock sheds collapsed, according to the Nagqu media office, citing city officials. More than 1,600 local people were deployed to help with rescue work, and emergency supplies sent to the area included prefabricated housing, tents and winter clothing.
The US Geological Survey placed the epicentre about 191km east-north-east of Nagqu, in a sparsely populated, high-altitude area. It recorded at least seven aftershocks. Communications were down in some affected areas, while railway authorities stopped trains passing through the region and rockfalls led to restrictions on a section of national highway 317.
