Rare photographs released in Myanmar appear to show ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi after she received gifts from King Charles. A presidential spokesperson said home ministry officials delivered two books about soil and gardening, plus a sealed envelope and a sealed diplomatic pouch.
The images show Suu Kyi, 81, smiling in a wood-panelled room. She is serving multiple sentences under house arrest at an undisclosed location in Naypyidaw. Her whereabouts and health had been difficult to establish before a Red Cross visit in August.
Critics said the photographs were a move by Myanmar’s military to ease its diplomatic isolation. Suu Kyi’s London-based son, Kim Aris, welcomed the gifts but warned against the regime using their delivery for its own purposes.
Suu Kyi was removed from power in a 2021 military coup. The war that followed has killed more than 100,000 people, according to conflict monitor ACLED.
