Israeli police said they detained 10 people in a rare operation targeting settlers in the occupied West Bank, following attacks on foreigners and Palestinians over the weekend. Police linked the detentions to attacks on foreigners and the construction of an illegal outpost.
US photojournalist Heidi Levine was beaten by masked Israeli men while covering the olive harvest in a Palestinian village on Friday. She suffered four broken vertebrae, a finger injury requiring surgery and cuts across her body.
The following day, attackers carrying sticks and iron bars assaulted European diplomats and Palestinians harvesting olives near Taybeh. A visiting French mayor was assaulted, an official car window was smashed and a young Palestinian man was severely injured.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu questioned accounts of the violence, referring to the attack on Levine as alleged and claims involving the diplomats as unproven. The attacks and his response drew criticism from US and European figures. A court later extended the detention of six men connected with the attacks.
