The US Department of Homeland Security says Ukrainians and Sudanese with temporary protected status remain shielded from deportation, despite the protection being due to end on Monday.
The approaching expiry affected about 101,000 Ukrainians and 1,800 Sudanese. The department said it would announce a decision later, without saying when that would happen or how long the migrants could remain in the US.
DHS did not clarify whether their work permits would continue. Temporary protected status generally allows people to work while it remains in force. Yuriy Boyechko, who leads Hope For Ukraine, criticised the short-term approach and called for a route to permanent residency.
