The US Department of Homeland Security says deportation protections remain in place for Ukrainians and Sudanese whose temporary status was due to expire on Monday.
About 101,000 Ukrainians and 1,800 Sudanese are covered. The department has not said how long they may remain in the US or when it will announce a decision on their status.
It also did not answer a question about whether they can keep their work permits. Temporary protected status generally permits people to work while it remains in effect.
Yuriy Boyechko, who heads Hope For Ukraine, called for a route to permanent residency for those affected. He said they could not safely return to Ukraine.
