Ukrainians and Sudanese covered by temporary protected status in the US remain shielded from immediate deportation, the Department of Homeland Security said, despite their protection having been due to expire on Monday.
The deadline applied to about 101,000 Ukrainians and 1,800 Sudanese. DHS said it would announce a decision later but gave no date or indication of how long those affected could stay.
The department did not answer a question about whether their work permits remain valid. Temporary protected status generally allows people to work while their protection is in effect.
Yuriy Boyechko, head of Hope For Ukraine, called for a route to permanent residency for those affected. He said Ukrainians covered by the measure could not safely return home.
