Operation Krypton has led to 321 arrests in Newport city centre since its launch in July 2026. The joint initiative by Gwent Police, Newport City Council and Hedyn targets anti-social behaviour, drug supply and shoplifting.
First planned as a summer operation lasting several weeks, it has been extended into winter amid community demand and its reported impact. Officers have carried out visible patrols around the High Street, bus station, Cambrian Road and Commercial Street, alongside drug warrants, weapon seizures and stolen vehicle recoveries.
Newport East MP Jessica Morden welcomed the operation’s return, saying it would help city-centre businesses address crime and anti-social behaviour. She said she planned to meet businesses and raise their concerns with police.
The arrest total has risen since September, when Gwent Police Superintendent Esyr Jones reported 241 arrests for offences including burglary, shoplifting, drug supply and disorderly behaviour.
