Israeli police have detained 10 people in a rare operation against settlers in the occupied West Bank. Police said the detentions were linked to attacks on foreign nationals and the construction of an illegal outpost.
The operation followed separate assaults involving US photojournalist Heidi Levine and a group of European diplomats and Palestinians. Levine was attacked by masked Israeli men on Friday while covering the olive harvest in a Palestinian village. She suffered four broken vertebrae, a finger injury requiring surgery and cuts across her body.
The following day, men armed with sticks and iron bars attacked diplomats and Palestinians harvesting olives near Taybeh. A visiting French mayor was assaulted, an official car window was smashed and a young Palestinian man was severely injured. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu questioned accounts of the violence; the attacks and his response drew criticism from US and European officials.
