Six Republican and six Democratic senators have urged Donald Trump to abandon a deal that would allow Russia to sell diesel through the lifting of sanctions.
The senators warned that the move would benefit Moscow at the expense of US allies. The deal has also drawn criticism in the UK and strained relations between Washington, Kyiv and other allies.
Trump has defended the decision as a way to increase fuel supplies and bring down pump prices before US elections next month that will decide control of Congress. Critics argue that Russian diesel sales would add to the Kremlin’s funds and help finance its war against Ukraine.
Fuel prices have risen amid disruption to oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz during the US war with Iran. Trump has increasingly blamed Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries for the price pressure.
