The US government has ordered civilian agencies to stop using AI tools developed by Chinese company DeepSeek. A Department of Homeland Security notice issued on Monday also requires them to remove DeepSeek products and third-party tools built using its technology from IT devices.
The department warned that using the tools may result in sensitive data being transferred to China if government employees or vendors use them. It pointed to DeepSeek’s servers in China and said Chinese law gives the government extensive authority to access private company infrastructure.
The direction does not extend to the military or intelligence services. The US and China are competing in AI, although their leaders agreed in September to establish a channel for communication about AI incidents.
