At least 52 civilians were killed in three days of fighting around Alamata in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, hospital staff said. A doctor at Alamata General Hospital said the clashes from Saturday to Monday involved heavy explosives and artillery, some of which struck homes.
Government troops appear to have taken control of Alamata from regional fighters and intend to advance towards Mekelle, Tigray’s main city. The government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front each accuse the other of starting the latest clashes, after months of tension over a 2022 peace deal.
Fighting has also spread to neighbouring regions. In Lalibela, 33 tourists have been stranded, with most visitors unable to leave since the airport closed to commercial flights. Médecins Sans Frontières said hospitals it supports in Tigray had admitted more than 700 wounded people in recent days. Communications cuts have made events in the region difficult to verify.
