Several people have been killed or injured in a large fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, the Canadian Armed Forces said. The military has not confirmed a death toll or the cause and said it was still assessing the impact.
The fire broke out at about 16:00 local time on Saturday. The Municipal District of Wainwright said strong winds carried it through the base’s fences; local officials indicated that crews had contained the blaze. Authorities urged residents to avoid the area and give way to emergency vehicles.
Defence Minister David McGuinty said military and local authorities were managing the fire. A Canadian broadcaster reported that Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton had declared a code orange, a disaster response measure for an incident involving many casualties.
