Russian strikes hit six Ukrainian energy facilities within hours of Donald Trump announcing an energy ceasefire, President Volodymyr Zelensky has said. Trump said on Sunday that the agreement would take effect immediately.
Zelensky said 33 people were injured in strikes on energy sites across Ukraine. He said Ukraine had not attacked during that period and accused Russia of continuing to target gas stations and other infrastructure.
Ukraine’s grid operator, Ukrenergo, reported fresh power cuts in Kharkiv, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia on Monday after attacks damaged energy equipment. It said electricity was being rationed in some areas to prevent further strain on the damaged system. Izyum also suffered blackouts after a strike destroyed power grids, Ukraine’s state news agency reported.
Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, said on Monday that Ukraine did not deserve a pause in fighting. Zelensky described the continued strikes as a sign that Russia would not accept an energy ceasefire.
