Street Fighter is on track to lead the domestic box office with an opening weekend of about $31 million. The film took in $13 million on Friday, including Thursday previews, and is playing in 3,575 North American theaters.
That projected debut is below Paramount Pictures’ expectation of a figure in the mid-$30 millions. Kitao Sakurai directed the $82 million adaptation of the Capcom video game, which stars Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji and Callina Liang. It is the first release under Paramount’s distribution deal with Legendary.
You Can See Everything, a documentary about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, is also drawing audiences. It earned $5.5 million on Friday, including previews, and is projected to open at around $12 million from 855 North American locations. A24 reported roughly 750 sold-out screenings for the weekend.
Whalefall, meanwhile, appears to be struggling at the box office.
