Atlanta police say two suspects were arrested in Illinois in connection with the fatal June shooting of Derrick Morgan, 33, in northwest Atlanta.
Police said 18-year-old Mario Johnson and a 15-year-old whose name has not been released were arrested Wednesday in Urbana with help from the FBI’s Springfield Violent Crime Task Force. Both face murder and aggravated assault charges and are being held in Illinois pending extradition to Atlanta.
Officers found Morgan with multiple gunshot wounds near a bus stop on Mango Circle NW in Monroe Heights on June 7. First responders tried to save him, but he died after being taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. Investigators said he had been walking with a group shortly before the gunfire.
Detectives later worked with MARTA to review transit footage and released images of three people seen in the area. Authorities have not identified the third person or said whether they expect further arrests. Police have not disclosed a motive.
