Southern California Edison had shut off power to more than 52,000 Los Angeles County customers amid strong winds and was considering shutoffs for another 59,000 as of 12:20 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16.
The utility says it uses public safety shutoffs to reduce the risk of its equipment starting wildfires, typically when winds are high and humidity is low. It also made such shutoffs Thursday. The city of Malibu said central and western parts of the city were affected.
A 146-acre fire broke out in Malibu on Thursday and was 17% contained by Friday morning. Separately, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power reported outages affecting about 900 customers in Granada Hills and 300 in Sylmar. Its spokeswoman, Mia Rose-Wong, said the utility does not use public safety power shutoffs.
