Months of high surf and powerful waves are breaking apart several ocean-facing homes on Long Beach’s Alamitos Peninsula. The historic wooden boardwalk has also splintered.
The narrow peninsula sits between Alamitos Bay and the Pacific Ocean. A breakwater built about 80 years ago protects much of the shore from waves arriving from the west, but a gap leaves a short stretch exposed to waves from the south. Residents and city officials fear the damage will worsen as “super El Niño” conditions peak this winter.
The National Weather Service warned this week of beach hazards along the Southern California coast. It said elevated surf and strong rip currents could affect south-facing beaches, including Long Beach, through Thursday afternoon. Newport Beach declared an emergency ahead of the storm.
